2r 300x262 Lhunath releases Gorillas 1.2 QBasic Classic ported to the iPhone

Ghent, Belgium – In the spirit of Easter, Gorillas, an iPhone port of the famous classic DOS game GORILLA.BAS, released a holiday edition with its second update. Introducing the new feature of player model selection, this update unlocks the first in a series of holiday models: the easter bunny.

Gorillas is an iPhone port of a game that was released together with MS-DOS 5 as a demonstration of the QBasic programming language. The original was basically a simplistic artillery game with a twist. Instead of artillery shooting missiles, gorillas were introduced that threw exploding bananas. The concept was very much in the spirit of King Kong and gorillas were placed in a city scape on top of buildings of arbitrary height. The goal was to find the right angle and velocity to throw your banana such that it would hit the opponent while dodging the surrounding buildings.

The iPhone port of this classic has kept most of the retro-feel which makes it very recougnisable. Improvements include, but aren’t limited to:

* Catchy background music
* Improved graphics such as fires, explosions and smoke
* Manual entry of angle and velocity was replaced by a single touch of the screen
* Camera can follow the action
* Game field can be zoomed for long shots
* Single-player gaming against an AI More »

Review: Who Wants to Be a Millionaire for iPhone

April 2nd, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in iPhone, iPhone games

139763 millionaire original Review: Who Wants to Be a Millionaire for iPhoneQuestion: Is an iPhone version of a TV game show well past its prime—where a single wrong answer ends your game, and the greatest victory possible is winning a ton of fake money—worth a $5 App Store purchase?

  • A: Yes, in spite of the creepy digitized Meredith Viera that launches each game.
  • B: Probably, as long as you don’t mind the constant tapping required to make the game go faster (instead of sitting through scoreboard animations, answer animations, lingering “Correct!” screens, and the like).
  • C:Sure, if you like trivia games with the added bonus of a few adequately-implemented lifelines.

The correct answer, of course, is D: It would be, if not for a showstopper bug. But we’ll get to that in a minute.

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire from Capcom Interactive is a reasonable iPhone-ified version of the syndicated game show, and it’s fun to play. The lack of high scores, though, is a huge oversight. (Why bother “walking away” if guessing to win more can’t hurt your average winnings?)

Integration with your address book with the “Phone-a-Friend” lifeline is cute. But the game always picks the same three friends for me (one of whom is… me).

Unfortunately, though, in my testing, the game crashes my iPhone every single time if I allow the screen to lock while playing. When I wake the device up again, the iPhone reboots. If the developers can squash that nasty bug, Millionaire would be a solid recommendation for trivia buffs.

Capcom also offers a free version that caps off your willings at the $2,000 question, if you want to try the game before parting with a $5 slice of your millions.

Who Wants to Be A Millionaire is compatible with any iPhone or iPod touch running the iPhone 2.2 software update.

Wolfenstein 3D in iPhone/iPod touch, new life for a classic one

wolfenstein3d iphone Wolfenstein 3D in iPhone/iPod touch, new life for a classic one

Wolfenstein 3D can consider like the precursor of “first person to shooter”, or games in first person, who was not able to be developed until the computers did not have the sufficient capacity of processing like moving complete surroundings in 3D.

Now, 17 years after the original creation of the game, we can enjoy in ours iPhones and iPod touch a version adapted to these devices, but that maintain the essence and the spirit of the original game.

I must recognize that I feel special weakness by this game, at the time of its launching a really new concept and elegant developed within the videojuegos was an authentic revolution to the being.

The prison in our pocket

The conversion of the game maintains all the characteristics of the original one: final enemies, secret doors, digitized voices of the enemies (who rare are to say this in 2009)… All the graphs have stayed and are faithful to the original version.

The original marker of the part has been altered inferior, that now show icons that represent the system of movement selected in the options of the game, and direct access to the map and the menu.

That yes, the legendary face of William J. Blazkowicz, the American spy protagonist of the game, stays in the part inferior to indicate the standard of life to us that we have left. When more pain reflects the face, more close we are of the death.

The control system

What it worried to me more about the conversion, was how we were going to play it. Of course, the keyboard is a great control system in our computers, or control DAP in consoles… but in iPhone was necessary to make a decision that implied a high usabilidad, rapidity and that in addition outside really intuitive.

For it, the multiple developers have chosen to offer to the player control ways, that we can personalize: in the corner left inferior we controlled the displacement using the left thumb, and the firing, with the right.

We can alternate between moving laterally or turning on we ourself, or to even form it to move laterally with the left thumb, to turn with the right and to shoot in the right zone superior. Creedme, to explain it is much more difficult that to prove it, it works really smooth and immediately we will take control of him.

In addition, and it is to be thankful, we can use the sensor of iPhone so that our protagonist responds to the movements of iPhone, moving it or turning moving it the device. We even can choose the sensitivity of the sensor. Solved very well, of course. I recommend the control system to you I put that you in the capture, is the one that easier has been to me.

The episodes

w3d niveles Wolfenstein 3D in iPhone/iPod touch, new life for a classic one

Wolfenstein 3D for iPhone contains the 6 episodes, with its corresponding 10 levels by episode, of which the original game consisted. That is to say, the 60 levels of classic diversion in our pocket.

A detail that also I have liked, is that we can begin the game in any level of him, is not necessary to go the previous ones. It is to be thankful, since perhaps if we bought this clasicazo it interests to us in particular to revivir some episode without having to happen through the previous ones.

By all means, also they are including the 4 levels of difficulty of the original game, where the enemies change their form to attack to us, are more numerous and much more difficult to kill.

Only for nostalgic

w3d disparo Wolfenstein 3D in iPhone/iPod touch, new life for a classic one

Wolfenstein 3D has great importance when we spoke of videojuegos in first person for iPhone, since it has demonstrated to us that juiceable can be obtained to something very using the touch screen. Person Abre to new ideas in this sense in others “first shooters” that, surely, will arrive soon. As it happened 17 years ago.

The price, 3,99€. Nevertheless, the value of this game, and to be able to have him on our telephones, acquires importance if it falls into the hands of which the original game lived: a landmark in the history of the videojuegos, complete, in our pockets.

To the meetings or the boring classes finished… I a.m. Death incarnate!
