2r 300x262 Lhunath releases Gorillas 1.2 QBasic Classic ported to the iPhone

Ghent, Belgium – In the spirit of Easter, Gorillas, an iPhone port of the famous classic DOS game GORILLA.BAS, released a holiday edition with its second update. Introducing the new feature of player model selection, this update unlocks the first in a series of holiday models: the easter bunny.

Gorillas is an iPhone port of a game that was released together with MS-DOS 5 as a demonstration of the QBasic programming language. The original was basically a simplistic artillery game with a twist. Instead of artillery shooting missiles, gorillas were introduced that threw exploding bananas. The concept was very much in the spirit of King Kong and gorillas were placed in a city scape on top of buildings of arbitrary height. The goal was to find the right angle and velocity to throw your banana such that it would hit the opponent while dodging the surrounding buildings.

The iPhone port of this classic has kept most of the retro-feel which makes it very recougnisable. Improvements include, but aren’t limited to:

* Catchy background music
* Improved graphics such as fires, explosions and smoke
* Manual entry of angle and velocity was replaced by a single touch of the screen
* Camera can follow the action
* Game field can be zoomed for long shots
* Single-player gaming against an AI More »

Review: Who Wants to Be a Millionaire for iPhone

April 2nd, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in iPhone, iPhone games

139763 millionaire original Review: Who Wants to Be a Millionaire for iPhoneQuestion: Is an iPhone version of a TV game show well past its prime—where a single wrong answer ends your game, and the greatest victory possible is winning a ton of fake money—worth a $5 App Store purchase?

  • A: Yes, in spite of the creepy digitized Meredith Viera that launches each game.
  • B: Probably, as long as you don’t mind the constant tapping required to make the game go faster (instead of sitting through scoreboard animations, answer animations, lingering “Correct!” screens, and the like).
  • C:Sure, if you like trivia games with the added bonus of a few adequately-implemented lifelines.

The correct answer, of course, is D: It would be, if not for a showstopper bug. But we’ll get to that in a minute.

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire from Capcom Interactive is a reasonable iPhone-ified version of the syndicated game show, and it’s fun to play. The lack of high scores, though, is a huge oversight. (Why bother “walking away” if guessing to win more can’t hurt your average winnings?)

Integration with your address book with the “Phone-a-Friend” lifeline is cute. But the game always picks the same three friends for me (one of whom is… me).

Unfortunately, though, in my testing, the game crashes my iPhone every single time if I allow the screen to lock while playing. When I wake the device up again, the iPhone reboots. If the developers can squash that nasty bug, Millionaire would be a solid recommendation for trivia buffs.

Capcom also offers a free version that caps off your willings at the $2,000 question, if you want to try the game before parting with a $5 slice of your millions.

Who Wants to Be A Millionaire is compatible with any iPhone or iPod touch running the iPhone 2.2 software update.
